FAQ
Welcome to Integrative Healthcare of Huntsville, where your journey to functional health begins!
Your first visit to Integrative Healthcare of Huntsville is the initial step towards understanding and addressing your health concerns. During this visit, you will have the opportunity to meet with Shawn Wheeler, CRNP, who will attentively listen to your health issues and gather crucial information.
Following this discussion, Shawn will recommend specific lab work tailored to your unique situation. These tests are designed to provide valuable insights into the factors affecting your health and contributing to your symptoms. Once the lab results are ready, you will have a follow-up appointment with Brett, our experienced healthcare provider. During this follow-up, Brett will comprehensively review the lab findings, explaining how they reveal the potential underlying causes of your health challenges.
Together, as a dedicated healthcare team, we will collaborate to craft a personalized and holistic plan that targets the root causes of your ailments. Our goal is to support your journey to improved health and well-being.
As an Integrative Healthcare Practice with functional medicine providers, our services are created with each patient in mind. We take a comprehensive and individualized approach to healthcare and believe in addressing the root cause of any illness or symptom. Unfortunately, insurance companies often limit the types of services and treatments that they cover, and they may not cover the comprehensive and individualized care we provide.
While we do not accept insurance plans, we can provide you with the necessary documentation to submit for reimbursement on your own. Additionally, our lab partner does take most insurances with exception of Aetna and Medicaid. It’s important to note that payment is due at the time of service, and reimbursement from your insurance provider is not guaranteed. But don’t let that discourage you from seeking the best care for your health and wellness! At Integrative Healthcare of Huntsville, we focus on helping you achieve optimal health and wellness.
Our medical practitioners will determine if hormone replacement therapy is an option for you only after reviewing specific lab work and your medical history. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) may help you alleviate symptoms of hormone imbalances and improve your quality of life. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) offers a range of benefits for individuals dealing with hormonal imbalances and related symptoms. Some key advantages of HRT include:
- Relief from Symptoms: HRT can effectively alleviate a variety of symptoms associated with hormonal imbalances, such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and fatigue.
- Improved Quality of Life: By addressing hormonal fluctuations, HRT can enhance your overall well-being, leading to better sleep, increased energy levels, and a more stable mood.
- Bone Health: For postmenopausal women, HRT can help maintain bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, which is common as estrogen levels decline.
- Heart Health: Some studies suggest that HRT may have a positive impact on cardiovascular health by improving cholesterol levels and reducing the risk of heart disease.
- Brain Function: Hormones play a role in cognitive function, and HRT may help maintain cognitive abilities, memory, and concentration as you age.
- Sexual Health: HRT can improve vaginal dryness and discomfort during intercourse, enhancing sexual comfort and intimacy.
- Skin and Hair: Hormonal changes can affect skin elasticity, moisture, and hair texture. HRT may contribute to healthier skin and hair.
- Weight Management: Hormone imbalances can sometimes contribute to weight gain or difficulty losing weight. HRT may help regulate metabolism and support weight management efforts.
- Individualized Treatment: HRT is tailored to your unique hormonal needs, ensuring a personalized approach that addresses your specific symptoms and concerns.
- Prevention of Health Risks: Addressing hormonal imbalances through HRT may help reduce the risk of certain health conditions associated with hormone fluctuations, such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular issues.
Adrenal dysregulation, often referred to as adrenal dysfunction or adrenal imbalance, is a condition that involves an irregular functioning of the adrenal glands. These small glands, located on top of the kidneys, play a vital role in producing hormones that help regulate various bodily functions, including metabolism, stress response, immune system function, and blood pressure.
- Adrenal dysregulation can manifest in different ways, such as:
- Chronic Fatigue: Feeling persistently tired and low in energy, even after adequate rest.
- Stress Sensitivity: Experiencing an exaggerated response to stressors, leading to feelings of anxiety, irritability, or emotional instability.
- Sleep Disruptions: Struggling with sleep patterns, including difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or experiencing unrefreshing sleep.
- Hormonal Imbalances: Adrenal dysfunction can impact other hormone systems, potentially leading to irregular menstrual cycles, mood swings, and even digestive issues.
- Weight Fluctuations: Adrenal imbalances might contribute to weight gain or difficulty losing weight.
- Digestive Problems: Adrenal dysregulation can affect digestion, leading to symptoms like bloating, constipation, or a sensitive stomach.
- Blood Sugar Irregularities: Adrenal glands play a role in regulating blood sugar levels. Dysregulation can contribute to glucose imbalances and cravings for sugary or high-carb foods.
- Weakened Immune Function: Chronic adrenal stress may compromise the immune system, making the body more susceptible to infections and illnesses.
- Brain Fog and Cognitive Issues: Some individuals with adrenal dysregulation report difficulties with focus, memory, and mental clarity.
Adrenal dysregulation can result from chronic stress, poor sleep, dietary choices, and other lifestyle factors. Functional medicine approaches, including stress management, nutritional adjustments, lifestyle changes, and potential supplementation, can help address adrenal imbalances and restore overall health and well-being. If you suspect adrenal dysregulation, consulting a healthcare provider experienced in integrative and functional medicine is recommended for proper assessment and tailored treatment.
Gut health is of paramount importance as it plays a central role in maintaining overall well-being and supporting various bodily functions, including hormone regulation, neurochemical production, and absorption of chemicals, nutrients, and vitamins. Here’s why gut health is so crucial:
- Digestion and Nutrient Absorption: A healthy gut is essential for breaking down food, extracting nutrients, and efficiently absorbing vitamins, minerals, and other essential compounds that fuel the body.
- Immune System Support: The gut is a critical component of the immune system. A balanced gut microbiota helps defend against harmful pathogens and plays a key role in preventing infections and diseases.
- Mood and Mental Health: The gut-brain connection highlights the impact of gut health on mental well-being. The gut produces neurotransmitters like serotonin, often referred to as the “feel-good” hormone. An imbalanced gut microbiome may contribute to mood disorders and cognitive issues.
- Inflammation Regulation: A healthy gut helps maintain a balanced immune response, preventing chronic inflammation that can lead to various health problems, including autoimmune diseases, allergies, and metabolic disorders.
- Weight Management: An imbalanced gut microbiome has been linked to obesity and metabolic disorders. The composition of gut bacteria can affect how the body processes food and stores fat.
- Skin Health: The gut-skin connection emphasizes the role of gut health in maintaining healthy skin. Gut imbalances can influence skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
- Heart Health: Emerging research suggests that gut health can impact cardiovascular health by influencing factors like cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and inflammation.
- Nutritional Status: An imbalanced gut microbiome might impair the absorption of certain nutrients, even if they’re present in the diet.
- Allergy and Autoimmune Risk: An unhealthy gut may contribute to the development of allergies and autoimmune disorders. A balanced gut microbiota helps modulate immune responses.
- Energy Production: The gut microbiota can influence energy production and metabolism by breaking down certain compounds that the body can’t process on its own.
Maintaining gut health involves consuming a diverse range of whole foods rich in fiber, prebiotics, and probiotics. Reducing stress, getting adequate sleep, staying hydrated, and avoiding excessive use of antibiotics are also essential. If you’re experiencing gut-related issues or seeking to improve your overall health, consulting a healthcare provider with expertise in integrative and functional medicine can provide personalized guidance and treatment options.
Integrative and functional medicine, combined with the use of nutritional supplements, can play a valuable role in addressing autoimmune issues by focusing on underlying causes, reducing inflammation, and supporting the body’s natural healing processes. Here’s how we can help:
- Comprehensive Assessment: Integrative and functional medicine practitioners take a functional approach, considering genetic, environmental, lifestyle, and immune system factors contributing to autoimmune conditions. They aim to identify triggers and root causes, such as food sensitivities, environmental toxins, and infections.
- Personalized Treatment Plans: These approaches emphasize individualized care. Treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s unique needs, focusing on addressing imbalances and deficiencies contributing to autoimmune responses.
- Nutritional Support: Nutritional supplements are used strategically to support immune function, reduce inflammation, and aid in healing the gut lining. Specific supplements like colostrum, butyrate, pre and probiotics, vitamin D, and certain antioxidants can help modulate the immune response.
- Gut Health: The gut plays a significant role in autoimmune conditions. Functional medicine aims to improve gut health through dietary changes, probiotics, and other supplements that promote a balanced gut microbiome. A healthy gut can help regulate immune responses and reduce systemic inflammation.
- Anti-Inflammatory Approach: Many autoimmune conditions involve chronic inflammation. Integrative and functional medicine practitioners can recommend supplements with anti-inflammatory properties, such as turmeric, quercetin, and berberinel, to help manage symptoms.
- Stress Management: Chronic stress can exacerbate autoimmune symptoms. These approaches emphasize stress reduction techniques, mindfulness, and relaxation methods to support the body’s stress response and overall immune function.
- Lifestyle Modifications: Integrative medicine promotes a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, adequate sleep, and balanced nutrition. These factors contribute to overall well-being and can help manage autoimmune conditions.
- Detoxification: Environmental toxins including heavy metals and mold may trigger or worsen autoimmune responses. Integrative medicine practitioners may recommend specific testing to determine what protocols can be provided to support the body’s detoxification processes and reduce toxin exposure.
- Functional Testing: Functional medicine employs advanced laboratory testing to identify nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, and other factors contributing to autoimmune conditions. This information guides targeted supplement recommendations.
- Collaborative Care: Integrative and functional medicine practitioners often work collaboratively with conventional medical providers to ensure comprehensive and well-rounded care.
It’s important to note that integrative and functional medicine approaches are tailored to each individual’s needs. Our practitioners work together to provide personalized treatment plans that include nutritional supplements to support your journey toward improved health and well-being. You should always consult a healthcare professional before starting any new supplements or treatment protocols, especially if you have an autoimmune condition or other underlying health concerns.
Functional medicine offers a comprehensive and personalized approach to weight management that goes beyond traditional methods. Here’s how functional medicine can help:
- Root Cause Identification: Functional medicine practitioners delve into the underlying factors contributing to weight gain. These can include hormonal imbalances, metabolic dysfunction, inflammation, gut health issues, and more.
- Personalized Treatment Plans: Rather than offering generic weight loss strategies, functional medicine creates individualized plans based on comprehensive assessments, including medical history, lab tests, and lifestyle factors. This ensures targeted and effective interventions.
- Hormonal Balance: Hormones play a crucial role in weight regulation. Functional medicine aims to identify any hormonal imbalances, such as thyroid dysfunction or insulin resistance, and address them through nutrition, supplements, and lifestyle changes.
- Nutritional Guidance: Functional medicine emphasizes whole, nutrient-dense foods that support optimal health and weight management. It addresses any food sensitivities, deficiencies, or imbalances that might be contributing to weight issues.
- Gut Health: Gut imbalances can impact weight. Functional medicine practitioners assess gut health and suggest strategies to improve digestion, nutrient absorption, and reduce inflammation through dietary adjustments and probiotics.
- Inflammation Management: Chronic inflammation can hinder weight loss efforts. Functional medicine focuses on an anti-inflammatory approach through diet, supplements (such as omega-3 fatty acids), and stress reduction.
- Balancing Blood Sugar: Stable blood sugar levels are key to weight management. Functional medicine helps regulate blood sugar through diet, exercise, and potential supplements like chromium and berberine.
- Mind-Body Connection: Emotional factors like stress, anxiety, and unhealthy relationships with food can contribute to weight gain. Functional medicine incorporates strategies for stress management, mindfulness, and addressing emotional triggers.
- Physical Activity: Functional medicine promotes regular physical activity that aligns with individual preferences and capabilities. Exercise plans are designed to support metabolism and overall health.
- Lifestyle Modifications: Sleep quality, hydration, and exposure to environmental toxins can affect weight. Functional medicine addresses these aspects to optimize weight management.
- Long-Term Solutions: Functional medicine isn’t about quick fixes but sustainable changes. It educates individuals about their bodies and empowers them to make informed choices for lifelong weight management.
- Regular Monitoring: Functional medicine involves ongoing assessment and adjustments to the treatment plan based on progress and changes in health status.
By addressing the unique factors contributing to weight gain, functional medicine offers a patient-centered approach that can lead to successful and lasting weight management. Consulting with a qualified functional medicine practitioner can provide you with personalized guidance and a roadmap to achieve your weight loss goals.
